The project
Why we do it
Every doorway has a story, even if nobody thought to write it down. The Doorway Files takes one ordinary address at a time and follows the evidence wherever it leads — through census records, directories, newspapers, archives, photographs and forgotten documents — until a name becomes a person and fragments become a story.
No famous residents required. No extraordinary history expected. Just real doors, real names and whatever the records still remember about the people who once walked through them.
What a file contains
A photograph of the doorway as it stands today. The names we uncover behind it. Census records, directories, newspapers, archival documents, photographs and whatever else the trail reveals. Each file follows the strongest human connections we find rather than attempting to document everyone who ever lived there.
Every completed file ends the same way: what we know, what we think, what we don't know — and a full Sources & Records list, so another researcher can pick up the trail and take it further.
We research the past, not the private lives of the people who live behind these doors today.
Method
Every doorway starts a trail. One record leads to another, and we follow wherever the evidence takes us — address → census → name → occupation → directory → newspaper → family → archive → photograph → story. Some doors reveal only a few verified fragments. Others reveal a great deal more. Both outcomes are valid, and we never know which one we have until we start looking.

The working desk for a file in progress
We start with a photograph and an address. An ordinary doorway as it stands today — sometimes photographed by us, sometimes discovered from afar — with no idea who we might find behind it.
National archives, census returns, city directories, cadastral records, newspapers and photographic archives. Every record that ties a name to a doorway, followed one clue at a time, until the people behind it come into focus.
We share what we uncover — the names, photographs, documents and human connections — written as a file that brings forgotten lives back to the doorway, while clearly separating what we know from what remains unknown.

“No fiction. No hype. Just what we find.”
